Albany, NH – On Sunday, October 11, 2026, at 3:21 p.m., 911 emergency communications received a call regarding an injured hiker on the Champney Falls Trail on Mt. Chocorua in Albany. The caller stated that he came upon an injured hiker who had fallen, injured their knee, and were unable to walk. Because there was no cell service on the trail, the caller had hiked towards the summit to get cell signal and then call 911.
New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers responded along with members of the Lakes Region Search and Rescue (LRSAR) team. The injured hiker was identified as Christian Filteau, 22, from Newmarket, NH. Filteau stated that he was hiking up the Champney Falls trail when he slipped and injured his left knee. He was approximately 2.5 miles from the trailhead parking area. Filteau was unable to bear weight and didn’t have cell signal, so he asked a hiker who was passing by to call 911 for assistance.
Filteau was assisted by some other hikers who came upon him. He was assessed and his knee was splinted. When rescuers arrived, it was determined that Filteau would be able to walk out with assistance from the rescue party. Filteau and the rescue party arrived at the trailhead parking area at 7:32 p.m.
New Hampshire Fish and Game is a self-funded agency which relies heavily upon volunteer rescue groups to complete the mission of search and rescue in the woodlands of the state. The public is encouraged to help support search and rescue activities by purchasing a Hike Safe Card. New Hampshire Fish and Game also reminds hikers to prepare themselves before venturing out into the wilderness, including packing the ten essential items: map, compass, warm clothing, extra food and water, headlamp, fire starter, first aid kit, whistle, rain/wind jacket and pants, and a knife.
