Carroll, NH – On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at approximately 2:52 p.m., NH Fish and Game was notified of a hiker suffering from a medical emergency on the Mt. Willard Trail in Carroll. Passing hikers began CPR while a call was made to 911.
Twin Mountain Fire and EMS personnel were activated and responded with medical gear, hiking in .25 miles to the scene where they began life saving efforts. In addition, AMC personnel from the Highland Center and volunteers from Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue (PEMISAR) along with Conservation Officers responded.
Unfortunately, all lifesaving efforts failed, and the hiker succumbed to an unknown medical event.
The hiker, identified as John Campbell, 69, of North Woodstock, NH, was going on a short hike with his wife when he collapsed. Campbell and his wife are both Hike Safe cardholders.
