Jaffrey, NH – On Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 4:15p.m., Conservation Officers were notified of an injured hiker on the White Dot Trail at Monadnock State Park. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Mountain Patrol Rangers had been contacted by the injured hiker’s companion at 12:27p.m. The caller reported that Sara Grube, 28, of Somerville, MA, had injured her lower leg while ascending the mountain and needed assistance. Mountain Patrol Rangers reached Grube, who was above the “Upper Junction”, at 1:03p.m. and began providing medical aid. Due to the distance from the bottom, Mountain Patrol Rangers attempted to assist Grube down under her own power to avoid a lengthy and difficult carry-out. Unfortunately, due to her injury this was not possible. Once it was determined that a carry-out was required, Conservation Officers responded and requested further assistance from the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, and from members of the Jaffrey Fire Department, Peterborough Fire Department, Troy Fire Department, and Marlborough Fire Department.
Mountain Patrol Rangers packaged Grube into a litter and rescuers carried her down the White Dot Trail to the Paradise Valley Trail to the Purgatory Trail to the Side Foot Trail and arrived at the Old Toll Road at approximately 8:00 p.m. This route was just under 1 mile and was over extremely difficult terrain. Grube was placed in a Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance and taken to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene for treatment of her injury.
NH Fish and Game’s response for this rescue was paid for with monies from the NH Hike Safe Card and the Search & Rescue Fund. No hunting, fishing, or trapping license fees are used for search and rescue missions.
