Low and Burbanks Grant, NH – On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 11, 2026, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers responded to the Valley Way Trail on Mt. Madison to assist a young man who had sustained an ankle injury while hiking.
At 2:40 p.m., Conservation Officers were made aware of a 15-year-old hiker who had suffered an ankle injury while jumping rock to rock at the intersection of Valley Way and Watson Path. The hiker was part of a group of 31 members of the Haverhill, Massachusetts, Marine Corps JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) who were day hiking in the area. Conservation Officers instructed the group to work together to hobble the teen down the trail while they responded with ATVs.
At 4:48 p.m., Conservation Officers met the group on Valley Way near the intersection with Beechwood Way (hiking trails) in Randolph. The injured hiker was ultimately placed on an ATV and driven to the Appalachia trailhead on US Route 2, arriving there safely at 5:10 p.m. Once roadside, the hiker was evaluated by staff from Gorham Ambulance. He ultimately opted to stay with his group and seek medical attention upon returning home.
