Gilsum, NH – On Monday, July 22, 2024 at 7:45 p.m., NH Fish and Game was notified of a single ATV rollover on private property in the town of Gilsum. A Conservation Officer responded to the scene along with Gilsum Fire Department, Keene Fire Department, and Cheshire EMS to assist the victim who was identified as a 15-year-old female.
An on-scene investigation determined that the youth operator had struck a tree along a trail. While attempting to back away from the tree she went off the trail, and down a steep embankment, rolling the machine onto herself. The youth was alone at the time of the crash and was able to call a friend on her cell phone who notified State Police Dispatch and 911. The operator was not wearing a helmet or eye protection at the time of the accident. The youth’s guardians were unaware that she had taken the ATV prior to the crash.
The youth operator was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center via helicopter with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. While the investigation is ongoing, it appears inexperience is the primary contributing factor to the accident. No further information is available at this time.
