Jaffrey, NH – On June 3, 2024 at approximately 5:00 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game was notified by a Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Mountain Patrol Ranger regarding a hiker experiencing heat-related complications in the area known as Paradise Slabs in Monadnock State Park. The victim, Amy Laroche, 33, of South Deerfield, MA, was hiking with friends when the incident occurred. Thankfully, members of the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team (UVWRT) were training on the mountain and were able to quickly get to the aid of Laroche.
UVWRT members and Monadnock Park staff were able to put Laroche in a litter and carry her down the White Arrow Trail to the top of the Old Toll Road. A Conservation Officer responded to the top of the Old Toll Road where it intersects the White Arrow Trail to assist. After receiving medical attention, Laroche was put in a waiting Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance for further evaluation. Laroche ultimately refused ambulance transportation and was transported from the State Park by her friends. Conservation Officers were assisted by Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Mountain Patrol Rangers, personnel from the Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance Service, and members of the Upper-Valley Wilderness Response Team (UVWRT).
Although Larouche and her hiking partners were well prepared for a day’s hike on Mount Monadnock, it is an important reminder for recreators to know their limits and to take environmental factors into consideration before heading out.
