Ellsworth, NH– At 3:43 p.m. on February 4, 2026, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department was notified of a snowmobile crash that occurred on a private trail in Ellsworth and that had resulted in a severe lower-leg injury. A riding companion helped dispatchers coordinate the best way to reach the crash site and stabilize the patient, Alan Slobodnik, 78, of Waterville Valley, NH.

First responders from Ashland Fire Department, Campton–Thornton Fire Rescue, Wentworth Fire Department, Campton Police Department, and a Fish and Game Conservation Officer responded to Loft Circle in Ellsworth to best access the crash location. The response was complicated by the personnel requirements of an already ongoing firefighting effort in Woodstock. Additional assistance was given by local snowmobilers and members of the Bruhawachet and Central New Hampshire Snowmobile Clubs.

Responders reached the crash at approximately 4:40 p.m. and rendered aid to Slobodnik. A towed rescue toboggan provided by the Wentworth Fire Department was used to evacuate Slobodnik from the scene of the crash, reaching the waiting Campton–Thornton ambulance at 5:18 p.m. Slobodnik was then transported to Concord Hospital–Laconia for further assessment and treatment.

Investigation of the crash showed that Slobodnik inadvertently left the trail which caused him to strike a large rock with his snowmobile. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Operator inexperience is considered the major contributing factor in the crash.

As we enter a busy winter break period with excellent snowmobile conditions throughout the State, snowmobilers are asked to enjoy the trails responsibly. Always ride within the limits of your ability and obey the laws.
