Albany, NH – On Friday, September 26, shortly before 4:00 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game was notified that a hiker was having severe cramps on the South Moat Trail. The hiker was Richard Crooks, 74, of Sandwich, MA. Crooks was hiking with a friend, and they were returning from the summit of South Moat Mountain when he began having severe cramps in his legs and arms. His hiking partner tried for nearly an hour to rehydrate Crooks so that he could continue on his own, but the cramps did not subside and he called 911 for assistance. They were over two miles from the trailhead.
Along with a Conservation Officer and a good Samaritan, members Lakes Region Search and Rescue responded. Rescuers arrived at Crooks’ location, and he was placed in a litter and carried out. He arrived back at the trailhead shortly after 9:00 p.m. and was taken by ambulance to the Memorial Hospital in North Conway for treatment.
