BEAN’S GRANT, NH – At approximately 1:00 p.m. Fish and Game Conservation Officers were notified of an injured hiker on Edmand’s Path in Bean’s Grant. The call came in via 911 and reported that a 19-year-old male had suffered a lower leg injury and was unable to walk out on his own.
The hiker, identified as Daniel Saukkonen of Chestnut Hill, MA, was one of the leaders of a student group from Newton, MA who were conducting a multi-day hike in the White Mountains. While descending on the Edmand’s Path, Saukkonen slipped down a wet rock and injured his lower leg. Members of his hiking party administered first aid and a call was placed for further assistance.
Conservation Officers and a member of Twin Mountain Ambulance hiked in approximately 1.5 miles to assess the nature of the injury. Although in pain and unable to place any weight on his leg, Saukkonen was determined to make it out without being carried. After assessing the injury, the first responders provided crutches and Saukkonen was able to work his way down the trail with some assistance and made it to the trailhead at approximately 6:00 p.m.
Saukkonen was evaluated by Twin Mountain Ambulance and transported to Littleton Regional Hospital for treatment of his injury.
