Thompson & Meserve’s Purchase, NH – On Monday, September 7, 2026, at approximately 9:45 p.m., NH Fish and Game was notified by NH State Police Dispatch of a hiker struggling to make it down the Jewell Trail. The initial call had come in from a third party, but then a second call came in from the hiker’s wife, who was with her husband, and called 911 requesting assistance.
The hiker, identified as Andrew Mahoney, 58, of Madison, NH, was descending the trail with his wife and daughter. Due to a medical condition, he was having trouble continuing down the trail. Two Conservation Officers were sent to assist Mahoney. In addition, Mahoney’s brother drove up from several hours away to render assistance in getting his brother down the mountain.
At 12:40 a.m., the Conservation Officers reached Mahoney. With support and motiviation from his brother, Mahoney was able to start moving, and with assistance from the group he was able to make steady progress down the trail. After several hours, Mahoney made it to the Base Station parking lot at 3:20 a.m.
