Alton, NH – On Monday, February 21, shortly after 1:30 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game was notified of a hiker who had sustained a serious but non-life threatening ankle injury on the Precipice Path off Straight Back Mountain in Alton. The hiker was not able to continue down the steep terrain and her hiking companion called 911 for assistance.
At approximately 2:45 p.m., rescuers arrived at the location of the hiker and her companion. The injured hiker was identified as Nancy Brooks, 66, from Gilmanton, NH. The hikers were prepared for the conditions and had proper footwear with traction devices. On the way down a steep section of the trail, Brooks’s foot slid on ice resulting in a debilitating injury. Brooks was unable to bear weight or walk. Brooks was carried approximately one mile to an awaiting Rescue Utility Vehicle manned by Alton Fire Department. She was transported another mile to an ambulance.
Along with Conservation Officers, members of Lakes Region Search and Rescue (LRSAR) and Alton, Gilmanton, New Durham, and Wolfeboro Fire Departments responded. Brooks was transported to Concord Hospital at Laconia for evaluation and treatment.
