Pittsburg, NH – At approximately 8:05 p.m. on Monday, February 17, a Conservation Officer and Pittsburg Police Department began response to a 911 call that had been placed by a snowmobiler who had become stuck in deep snow in a remote area closed to snowmobiling near South Bay Bog. The caller, identified as Scott Nadeau, 52, of New Boston, stated that in addition to being stuck, he had lost his gloves in the snow and believed he had frostbite on his hands. While Conservation Officers were preparing gear for the search, Nadeau was advised to start his snowmobile and to carefully warm his hands near the engine, being mindful of moving parts such as the clutch. Air temperature at the time of the call was -5ºF.
Officers were able to utilize GPS coordinates obtained from the 911 cellular phone call to plot a point on a computer program, giving them a location to begin the search for Nadeau and the best means of approach. At approximately 10:00 p.m., officers located Nadeau and his stuck machine near an active logging job on Bog Branch Road. Nadeau was assessed at the scene, transported by snowmobile to a warm vehicle and then to the Pittsburg Police Department for further investigation.
He was subsequently charged with operating a snowmobile on property of another without written permission and operating a snowmobile in a manner so as to endanger any person. His snowmobile was towed from the scene and Nadeau was transported back to his rental unit. Ambient air temperature at the conclusion of the rescue was -12ºF.
