Holderness, NH – On Saturday, October 26, 2019 at approximately 6:00 p.m., 911 Dispatch received a call from two lost hikers in the vicinity of Mt. Percival. Sophie Yang, 28, from Brockton, Massachusetts, and her friend Wendy Lee, 29, from Boston were hiking the Mt. Percival trail in Holderness. They summited Mt. Percival and shortly after descending, found themselves off trail. They called 911 for assistance and NH Fish and Game responded. They were approximately 800 feet from the trail and Conservation Officers attempted to talk them back to the trail but they had no lights, map, or compass and were unable to navigate. A Conservation Officer hiked in and located them at 9:38 p.m. They were escorted back to their vehicle at the Mt. Percival parking area.
This incident is a good reminder to all people recreating in the outdoors to plan appropriately when hiking. When hiking in the mountains always carry appropriate equipment for unexpected situations and be prepared to spend the night if necessary. Having appropriate gear aids in safety.
