Sargent’s Purchase, NH – Tuesday evening at approximately 5:30 PM Fish and Game Conservation Officers were notified of an injured hiker at the junction of Tuckerman Ravine Trail and Alpine Garden Trail approximately ¾ of a mile below the summit of Mt. Washington. The call came in via 911 reporting that a 30-year-old male had suffered a lower leg injury and it was unclear if he would be able to hike out under his own power.
The hiker, identified as Steven Brandon of Brighton, MA, was descending the Tuckerman Ravine Trail when he slipped on a rock and injured his leg. Brandon had been hiking alone and when another hiker found him she volunteered to make a call for help and stay with him.
After evaluating options and securing the injured leg, Brandon decided to attempt to hike with the assistance of trekking poles. Not able to hike back up to the summit or down Tuckerman Ravine, Brandon was advised to hike across Alpine Garden towards the Mt. Washington Auto Road. The Good Samaritan hiker continued to stay with Brandon, providing assistance and carrying his pack.
At approximately 7:00 PM they were met by two responding Conservation Officers who had utilized the Auto Road to access Alpine Garden trail via the upper stretch of Huntington Ravine Trail. Brandon was assessed on scene and deemed capable of continuing to hike out with assistance. At approximately 7:30 PM Brandon and the rescue crew arrived at waiting vehicles.
Brandon was transported down the Auto Road and back to Pinkham Notch Visitor Center where he had started his hike. He declined an ambulance and opted to seek medical treatment on his own.
