Sargent’s Purchase, NH – Wednesday evening at approximately 6:45 PM, Fish and Game Conservation Officers were notified of an injured hiker off trail near the Crawford Path approximately 1 mile from the summit of Mt. Washington. The call came in via 911 reporting that a 57-year-old female had suffered a potentially serious lower leg injury and would not be able to hike out under her own power.

The hiker, identified as Lisa Sjostrom of Norwich, VT, had been hiking toward the Lakes of the Clouds Hut when she slipped on a rock and injured her leg. Members of Sjostrom’s hiking party reported the injury to AMC personnel at Lakes of the Clouds Hut. Hut crewmembers located the injured hiker, realized the severity of the injury, and called 911 for help.

Conservation Officers and several volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue (AVSAR), Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), and Mt. Washington State Parks responded.

The rescuers utilized the Mt. Washington Auto Road to drive to the summit and hiked down Crawford Path to Sjostrom. From there she was packaged in a rescue litter and carried back up the mountain to the summit where she was placed in a personal vehicle and transported to the base of the Auto Road. Due to the nature of the injury, Sjostrom was transported by Gorham EMS ambulance to Androscoggin Valley Hospital (AVH) in Berlin for treatment of her injury.

The rescue crew started the carryout at approximately 9:30 PM and arrived at the summit at 10:50 PM.
