Bethlehem, NH – On June 17, 2019 at 9:32 pm, New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers were notified of two lost and unprepared hikers. Nathan Wood, 25, of North Port, Florida, called 911 to advise that his hiking companions were lost off trail without lights somewhere near the North Twin Trail. The two lost hikers were identified as Matthew Wood, 29, of Providence, Rhode Island, and Robert Wood, 25, of Sarasota, Florida.

A GPS coordinate was obtained for the two lost hikers putting them roughly 1 mile from the trailhead. Conservation Officers hiked into their location finding the lost hikers at 11:58 pm. The hikers were given lights and were walked out, reaching their vehicle at 12:30 am. No one in the group had a map or lights; they were using their cell phones.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers would like to remind anyone enjoying the outdoors this summer to plan ahead and make safe decisions. Hiking in the White Mountains requires proper planning and preparation. All hikers should carry essential equipment to be ready not just for the intended hike, but other issues that could arise.
