Jaffrey, NH – On Monday, May 13 at approximately 6:45 PM, New Hampshire Fish and Game was notified by Mountain Patrol Rangers, at Monadnock State Park, that a hiker was injured on the White Dot Trail in Jaffrey. The hiker was identified as Ashley McCarthy, 19, of Ledyard, CT. McCarthy was hiking with a college group from Salve Regina University when she sustained an injury to her lower left leg while descending the White Dot Trail. The group contacted the state park for assistance.
Mountain Patrol Rangers were able to render first aid to McCarthy on scene and determined the victim was unable to walk and would require a carry out. Members of the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team and three Conservation Officers also responded to the carry out. Rescue personnel carried McCarthy down the remainder of the White Dot Trail to the State Park Headquarters at approximately 8:45 PM. McCarthy was transported to the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough by the Jaffrey Rindge Memorial Ambulance for further treatment.
This incident is a good reminder to all people recreating in the outdoors to plan appropriately when hiking.
